Chuck Manly Album
Chuck Manly was a coxswain on Edgewater Crew from 1990 - 1992. From birth he battled a terminal affliction that had claimed his 2 older brothers and he began coxing shortly after a huge seizure wiped out his short term memory. He overcame his difficulty by facing this task with pen, paper, and perseverance to jotting down anything of importance. The men's Varsity eight, under his guidance, swept the state in 1992. After graduating and one and a half years of college, Chuck returned home due to health issues. Once again, he returned to Edgewater Crew as an assistant coach in 1994.
When coxing, Chuck had a way of making the heaviest boat seem light and the worst water seem like glass. It was the strength of his words, which motivated many rowers to take one more stroke or push it a little harder. He was always very positive and knew how to ignite rowers into seeking victory. You never think the strongest man is the one who steers the boat , but that was the case when Chuck was coxing. After a lifetime of fighting his illness, Chuck died on April 23, 1998.
Our thanks to Chuck's father for sharing this album. Most of the racing photos are from the 1991 season.
